Can I use images to support children with the What’s that sound?
If you watch the ‘How to’ video for ‘What’s that sound?’, you’ll notice the teacher plays each sound from her laptop without showing any images. The aim of the activity is to develop children’s listening skills and confidence as they identify sounds using their ears alone – with no clues!
For children who recognise the sound but can’t yet recall it, simply model the correct word for them, once they have listened to the sound and have had a go at identifying it. If vocabulary is the barrier – for example, for some EAL learners or children with hearing‑related needs – show an image after the sound has been identified, to make the link between the word and its meaning.
