Non-verbal

Do non-verbal or selectively mute pupils need to do the Phonics Screening Check?

There is guidance about which pupils should not take the Phonics Screening Check (go to Section 4: Participating pupils).

This includes pupils who:
  • are working below the standard
  • are EAL
  • use British Sign Language (BSL)
  • are non-verbal or selectively mute.
Headteachers make the final decision about whether it is appropriate for a pupil to take
the check.
