Do you have a tricky word mat?
No, we do not have a tricky word mat included in our programme. We have a list of tricky words for each phase in the programme overview. The Reception and Year 1 overviews detail which week each tricky word is taught.
We have not created tricky word mats for each phase because the tricky words become decodable as the children grow their phonic knowledge. This means the word mats would have to change week by week.
Research shows that children segmenting the tricky words to spell and thinking about the tricky bit is more effective than learning the words by sight. We suggest you use your pocket charts to display the tricky word cards, moving them around, so the children don't learn them by where they are in the display. In this way you can change which words are tricky easily.
