How do I support Year 1 children who struggle to read words with graphemes with more than one sound?

We have a great new ‘Graphemes with more than one sound’ additional practice resource for that! You’ll find it on the Support for teachers tab in Year 1 Resources.

Use it alongside the ‘Phase 5 alternative sounds’ images, which you’ll find on the Use in class tab, for a sorting activity. This activity is ideal for children who can identify the graphemes but find attributing the correct phoneme difficult.

If children cannot identify digraphs with ease, use the Reading words with speedy digraph recognition prompt card on page 8 of the Individual Daily Keep-up for Year 1.
