How do I teach a split vowel digraph?
The split vowel digraphs a-e, i-e, o-e, u-e and e-e are taught in Year 1 Autumn 2. For support with teaching, watch the Year 1 ‘How to’ videos:
- Phase 5: Reading words containing a split vowel digraph
- Phase 5: Spelling words containing a split vowel digraph
An alternative pronunciation for ‘o-e’ – /u/ as in ‘love’ – is taught in a ‘Grow the code’ lesson in Year 1 Spring 1.
