How do we develop children’s oracy?

The Government Response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review (November 2025) states that:

“... the importance of clear speaking and listening skills is very clearly set out by the Review. We will act on this by introducing an oracy framework, which will complement the reading and writing frameworks and will guide teachers through the evidence that supports the best teaching approaches.”

The Government’s introduction of an oracy framework is intended to help pupils ‘become confident, fluent speakers by the end of KS2’.

Little Wandle recognises that developing children’s oracy is a crucial component in building the foundations needed for literacy. We support this through:

  • the Foundations for Language programme, which develops speaking and listening skills in Nursery and Reception.
  • integrating dialogic talk into all reading practice sessions from Reception onwards.
