How do we support reluctant speakers to join in small-group talk?

Some little ones may need more time and gentle scaffolding before they start to speak in small groups at Nursery. 

Use our interaction techniques ‘Pause more’ and ‘Give choices’ to allow children time to join in without feeling any pressure and offer options to choose from that provide a model for how to respond.

Your patience, warmth and modelling will help encourage them to join in when they’re ready.
