How do we help our EAL children in Nursery?
Model English!
You are the most important language teacher for your EAL children. You need to:
- speak clearly with enunciated sounds
- use a wide range of vocabulary
- gently correct grammar and build on what children say.
Our Foundations for Language interaction techniques will give you everything you need to make sure every conversation builds language.
Remember that some EAL children might go through a silent period for up to six months, while other children will be more confident. Make sure that children are not pressured to speak, but give them plenty of opportunities to talk when they are ready.
