How does Little Wandle align with the end of year expectations in Year 1?
In Year 1, the Phonics Screening Check looms large and it can eat up a lot of teacher time worrying about its results. It only tests one thing:
‘The purpose of the Phonics Screening Check will be to confirm that all children have learned phonic decoding to an age-appropriate standard.’ DfE 2011
Of course, this information is incredibly helpful: knowledge of our alphabetic code and the ability to decode words are the foundations of reading.
But reading is so much more. And that is why we also look at the National Curriculum to help us better understand what a Year 1 reader should look like at the end of the year.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised has been developed to go beyond the Phonics Screening Check to incorporate all aspects of the Year 1 Programme of Study. We cover this in our comprehensive blog here!
