How does the SEND lesson planning work?
We would suggest that you teach each small groups of GPCs using the grapheme-by-grapheme planning first:
Once your pupils are confident with the first group of GPCs, you can use the blending grids to practise blending with these GPCs.
How long this will take will really depend on the child. Some children following the SEND programme can cope with two new GPCs every day, allowing them to move onto blending more quickly. Others will need small-step teaching and take longer to progress. The SEND programme is designed to be very flexible to meet the needs of your pupils.
You will also need to teach tricky words using the 'Support for tricky words' guidance to ensure children can access the decodable books.
Once your pupils have mastered blending with a group of GPCs, you can move on to teaching the next set of GPCs using the grapheme-by-grapheme planning, before switching back to the blending grids for those GPCs.
