What is the reading speed threshold to pass the final fluency test and exit the programme?
For the main and SEND programme, children who can read the final fluency assessment at 60–70+ words per minute are ready to exit the Little Wandle programme and do not need to read any more of our fully decodable books.
Children can exit the Rapid Catch-up programme when they are able to read at 90+
words per minute with a good rate of accuracy. At this level, they should have adequate
fluency and phonic knowledge for all age-appropriate reading materials.
For more information on passing the fluency test, please refer to our guidance documents for the main, SEND and Rapid Catch-up programme.
