How often should we teach the different parts of the Foundations programme to different age groups?
Foundations for Phonics, Language and a Love of Reading are all designed for three- and four-year-olds to get them off to a flying start with their reading in Reception.
We suggest you teach Foundations for Phonics sessions at least three times a week, although you will see the biggest impact if you can teach daily.
Foundations for a Love of Reading can be used to plan daily sessions over a blocked period of one or two weeks.
Foundations for Language is an approach that should be woven into your interactions every day!
For two-year olds, we suggest that you hold off starting the Foundations for Phonics teaching and the adult-led sessions included in the Foundations for a Love of Reading, as they might find the length and concentration required too much! However, please do use Foundations for Language to support your daily interactions with your littlest ones. They will also love joining in with the suggested continuous provision ideas included in the Foundations for a Love of Reading planning.
