Reading

How should we support children who are reading already?

Children who can read words when they start Nursery are likely to have had a rich diet of books and early literacy at home. Not all children will have had this head start, and it is our job to help those who haven’t. This is why we suggest you focus your Foundations support on the children who need you the most to get them ready for reading in Reception.

For your little early readers, give them lots of encouragement, access to great books and plenty of opportunities to develop their early literacy during continuous provision. This will be enough for them to fly when it comes to learning phonics in Reception. Focus on their other areas of learning. Let them play and enjoy Nursery! Save your worries for those children for whom reading risks not coming so easily.
