Headteachers
If some of my children are ready, can I teach them the graphemes?
Please don’t use your limited adult-led teaching time to systematically teach GPCs. Children will have all of Reception and Year 1 to learn this! Instead, focus on getting all your children ready for Reception by teaching the essential pre-phonics skills by following the Foundations programme.
Encourage children to link their sound knowledge to graphemes during their child-initiated play. For example, if they want to write a card to their mum or dad and they ask you to help them, use this moment to teach the graphemes they need.
