I’m teaching the Spelling units. Where can I find the sentences and how do I use them?
All the Spelling unit lessons are supported with a set of whiteboard display slides to be used in class, which you’ll find in the Planning area. The slides are numbered and these numbers are given in the weekly planning so that you can make sure you are displaying the right slide at the right time.
There are several activities that use sentences in the Spelling units. These include:
- Homophones
- Write the missing homophone
- Write the missing word
- Dictation
With all of these, be sure to read the weekly grid carefully to make sure you are revealing the right sentence at the right time.
Don’t confuse the Dictation activity with the Write a sentence activity that was a key part of the core programme!
In the Dictation activity the children should not see the sentence at all before they write it! Only show it to them once they have written it for them to check their work against. You can support your children’s developing dictation skills in several ways including:
- chunking up the sentence
- pre-teaching any words that you know will be an issue for your class
- providing a shorter, scaffolded sentence for children who need a lot of support
Do take a look at the wonderful Dictation ‘How to’ videos to see these in action!
