In the suggested tricky word lists, why are Year 2 Common Exception Words (CEWs) being taught in Year 1?
All the Common Exception Words (CEWs) from Year 1 and Year 2 in the National Curriculum (2014) spelling appendix are integrated into our programme so children can read these words. They are needed for reading as they are very common words. We teach children to spell these words at the same time, as we have high expectations for our pupils and we know that reading and spelling are reversible processes.
All the CEWs are covered in the programme but some are not tricky words according to where we teach them in our progression – please see our Reception and Year 1 overviews.
