Does Little Wandle Handwriting follow the same progression as the phonics programme?
No. Letter formation is taught in families, not phonics order.
This is because letters within the families have similar features, including starting positions and orientation. This supports motor development and reduces cognitive load.
However, the handwriting progression has been designed to work alongside our phonics progression. With the exception of ‘q’, children starting the Handwriting programme at the beginning of Reception won’t be taught to write a grapheme until they’ve learned its corresponding phoneme in phonics.
