Less than 70% of my class are secure in reading decodable words in Spring 1. What should I do?

• Stop and secure. First, reteach Spring 1 GPCs that are below 70% and reassess.
• Then, if blending remains below 70%, use the Phase 3 additional blending practice planning for a short, targeted period to secure blending. Most schools will not need to do this for longer than a week. Children need to be able to blend Spring 1 words securely before moving on to the longer and more complex words introduced in Spring 2.
• Once over 70% of the class can blend words with Phase 3 GPCs securely, move on to Spring 2.

Any children who are still not secure in Spring 1 blending will require Daily Keep-up in line with the Reception Daily Keep-up flowchart.
