Headteachers
Should my pupils read all of the Little Wandle Fluency books at each level before moving on?
Pupils do not need to read all the books at each fluency level before moving on to the next level. We would suggest that you start all your Year 2 pupils on F1 once they have successfully read Phase 5, Set 5 books for at least five weeks and are reading at 60-70WPM with 90%+ accuracy.
Get them to read at least three F1 books before using your teacher judgement to decide whether to move them on to F2 or not. Look out for children who need that extra time when you hear them read and who struggle to decode some of the longer words. These children will need more at F1 level. Other children will be flying through confidently and they can move onto F2.
After 12 weeks, use the ongoing fluency assessment to work out which book to move each child onto next. Excitingly, we will be bringing out two more books at each fluency level! This will give you more choice and further opportunity to build children’s fluency, confidence and stamina at the pace that suits them.
