Should non-verbal children stay on wordless books or can they move onto worded ones?
In terms of children who are non-verbal and their reading, it is really important to remember that just because they are not reading out loud, it does not mean that they are not reading in their heads.
Your job is to find out what they can do, rather than assume what they can't do. The way to do this is to use your careful assessments to constantly work out what they can do by getting them to point at pictures. The assessments for the core programme and SEND programme both have images to go with every word.
If your assessments show you that a child can identify GPCs and blend them to read words, then they can access worded books.
There are a series of questions that you can use to check that they have understood what they have read.
