Should we use other programmes alongside Little Wandle to help dyslexic pupils struggling with phonic recall?
It might really help to look at the work and advice from Susan Godsland and from the Reading Ape.
Children with dyslexia do not need a different approach or more strategies or more ‘hooks’. They need vastly more practice than their peers.
We would suggest that you ensure the children get at least three short sessions a day on top of the whole lesson. These short sessions need to be:
- Shuffle time for GPCs and words
- Teacher-led blending if they are not blending
- Mix it up to make words
- Reteaching of GPCs.
They will learn to read but it is harder for them and they need lots of support. Have a really good delve into the research – it is fascinating – and make a plan for these lovely children.
