Little Wandle Handwriting provides planning and resources for the whole Reception year from the start of September. As the Pupil workbooks won’t be published until November 2025, what is your advice if we want to start using the programme this year?

If you want to start using the Handwriting programme in the school year 2025–26, use your teacher judgement to identify the right starting point:

• If children are still developing pencil control, start with Unit 1: Patterns
• If children have secure pencil grip and control, begin with Unit 2: Lower-case letters.

Don’t worry if you don’t reach Unit 7 this year. Focus on Units 1 to 6. The Year 1 programme, launching in the Spring term, will consolidate both lower case and capital letters so this year’s Reception children will have plenty of time to practise.
