We have some children who are still only able to recognise three or four graphemes and are unable to blend.
In Reception, the children who are not blending (yet) should be taught daily through additional blending practice. Do this within their reading practice sessions. They should also have time to explore book behaviours and talk, using either our wordless books (or any wordless book) or through the teacher reading a picture book to the children that they can talk about.
These children should have a wordless book going home or a picture book for sharing.
All children should be able to choose sharing books (picture books or non-fiction, etc.) to go home and share with their parent as well as their reading practice book after they have read it three times.
