What books do you recommend for pupils starting the SEND programme at Phase 3?
Once you have completed the placement assessment and used the matching grid you can choose the right book for your child.
If they are secure on Phase 2 and able to blend you may be able to give them a Phase 2 decodable book. Children will always be reading a book below where they are being taught as they need to have secure phonic knowledge. So, for example, if your child is going to start on Phase 3, they won't be able to read a Phase 3 book yet as they won't be secure on that content. Please do use the matching grid as it gives really clear advice about how to match the books successfully.
You can choose appropriate blending practice or the decodable books. If the child is older, in Year 2 or KS2, you could also use the 7+ books if you have them. Older children might prefer the content and the look of those 7+ books.
There are some really lovely ‘How to’ videos on our website from our Champion School, Willow Dene, that show you how you can make adaptations to your reading sessions if you need to. They can be found in the SEND area of our website in the reading section.
