What do I do for children reading at a higher level than their peers in Reception and Year 1?
Use the assessments and matching grid to work out the suitable books for these children. Ensure they can read the GPCs and words when you assess them. They can join other Reading practice groups if needed, for example in the year above. Phase 5 is not suitable for Reception.
In Year 1, children should not start Phase 5 books before being taught the GPCs. These children can read the books as soon as they are secure with the GPCs and can go through them more quickly.
