What do I do with children who are way ahead or behind in reading sessions?
If you have children who are way ahead, integrate them into your highest-level reading practice group but with their own book. Involve them in the pre-read activities, make sure you tap in to hear them read, ensure you model prosody for them in the second read, and make a few minutes to speak to them about comprehension for the third read.
Children who are significantly behind in Year 1 may have to join a Reception group if they are reading Phase 2 books (but that depends on the child). In Reception the children who are not blending (yet) should have additional blending practice and a wordless book/shared book.
