What’s included in the Little Wandle Handwriting programme?
The programme includes guidance, planning and pupil resources, giving you a clear and structured progression for the whole Reception year.
The programme consists of seven units of learning:
- Unit 1: Patterns – focuses on pre-writing strokes
- Units 2–5: Lower-case letters – teaches correct letter formation in letter families
- Unit 6: Capital letters – includes revision of lower-case letters
- Unit 7: Digraphs and trigraphs – applies learning to digraphs, trigraphs and words containing these graphemes.
The lessons in each unit follow a set structure:
- A review of the previous day’s learning
- Direct teaching through strong modelling
- Multi-sensory practice (air writing, palm tracing)
- Guided and independent application
- Precise feedback to embed learning in children’s long-term memory.
