Headteachers
What if children aren’t retaining sounds after 1:1 sessions?
We advise that you use a small-step approach to teach each sound – use ‘What's in the box?’ to check they can hear the sounds and then teach a new Phase 2 GPC prompt card for each sound.
Keep on reviewing the sounds you are teaching, spend two sessions on each sound and return to the sounds you have been teaching as you review. Consider using the precision teaching method as well.
In short keep going with the sounds and secure them - a top trick though is to teach the GPCs that start a child’s name - those tend to stick even if others don’t.
