What support should we offer parents of children who are early readers?
Some children will start Nursery already recognising some sounds and words. These children have often been fortunate enough to be read and talked to a lot at home, right from birth. It is important to encourage these families to continue what they’re doing at home with their children, whilst explaining that at Nursery, you will be focusing on their child’s development more globally. It’s great that early literacy is a strength, but are there any other areas their child needs more support with? Reassure families that by focusing on these areas, along with Communication and Language, their children will get off to a flying start when they start learning to read, and so much more, in Reception.
