Non-verbal

What's your advice when working with non-verbal children?

We have lots of support for non-verbal learners.

Use the image bank in the SEND area so that you have images to support oral blending and word reading.

The child should be able to access Reception teaching with adaptations.

Have a look at the advice in the SEND programme prompt cards and guidance for how to adapt your teaching and resources to support non-verbal learners.

A child does not need to read aloud to be able to read. Many children with SPLD and other disabilities read in their heads, as they can't produce speech.

Our job is to teach this child to recognise sounds, link them to graphemes and teach them to read the words and attach meaning to them.
