Phase 3
When should children start taking reading practice books home in Reception?
Children should only take home reading practice books that match their phonic knowledge.
For the first three weeks of teaching we recommend that you send home a sharing book for parents to read to children. Once reading practice sessions are established, children should also take home a reading practice book matched to their secure phonic knowledge. Children who haven’t yet mastered blending should take home a wordless book.
Ensure that parents understand the purpose of the different types of books by directing them to the information and videos on the ‘Books coming home’ tab in the ‘For parents’ section of the website.
