Why aren’t there word cards for teacher-led blending?
The teacher-led blending words should be created using the grapheme cards – this is shown clearly in the ‘How to’ video Reception: Teacher-led blending and the prompt card Teach and practise: Phase 2 read words.
Teaching blending with grapheme cards allows you to model each step in a way that you can’t with word cards. We believe that time spent teaching blending in this way in every lesson ensures that every child in Reception learns to blend. Many of the words taught in teacher-led blending appear on word cards later on, when you move to independent reading.
