Blending

Why do some children find it hard to master blending?

You might have some children in your class who are finding it harder to master blending, so let’s start with understanding some of the reasons for this.

  • If a child is struggling to blend, ensure their sight and hearing are checked as a first step.
  • Remember some children have difficulty producing sounds and so blending aloud takes longer. Accept the sounds the child makes and how they blend them into words. Check what they are hearing and blending by using images. (Watch the ‘Blending masterclass’ webinar to find out more about this.)
  • Bilingual or multilingual children may take longer to tune into the sounds of English and so may need more time and practice.
