What are the two types of vocabulary?
There are two types of vocabulary:
- Receptive vocabulary – words children understand
- Expressive vocabulary – words children can say.
Children usually understand more words than they can say and use in their everyday language.
Hearing words repeatedly in context helps to support both receptive and expressive language.
So, as practitioners, we can really help to develop children’s vocabulary in our everyday interactions with children, along with planning specific vocabulary to teach.
